World of Weizen

Weizen, German for wheat beer, is on of the most popular brews to come out of the country.  Top-fermented by law, the flavors vary considerably depending on the specific style from dark to light and filtered to unfiltered.  Let’s explore the world of German Wheat Beer!

1) Weihenstephaner Kristall Weissbier

Brauerei Weihenstephan        Kristalweizen…5.4% ABV

Coming from the oldest commercial brewery in the world, this weizen is the filtered type.  Filtering a hefeweizen takes the yeast out of the fluid, yielding crystal clear beer rather than cloudy.

2) Erdinger Hefe-Weizen

Erdinger Weissbräu        Hefeweizen…5.3% ABV

It is brewed according to a traditional recipe and in strict accordance with the Bavarian Purity Law. Bottle-fermented in the traditional way since 1886; it takes 3- 4 weeks for with fine yeast to mature.

3) Ayinger Brau-Weisse

Brauerei Aying         Hefeweizen…5.1% ABV

Brewing since 1876, they have a full line of beer.  Full-bodied, very soft and mild with a lively, champagne-like sparkle.  Distinct banana aroma with a cloudy and flowery yeast character.

4) Hopf Weisser Bock

Weissbierbrauerei Hopf       Weizenbock ……7.0% ABV

A traditional dark, strong wheat beer with a beautiful Marzen-color. A well balanced drinking experience, excellent with duck, venison, roasted pork and wild boar.  Brewing out of Miesbach.

5) Ayinger Weizen Bock

Brauerei Aying Weizenbock ……7.1% ABV

2009 Beer of the Year this classic hefe-weizen has notes of dense fruit and a spice driven core, fresh baked bread, and accents of tropical fruit.  It’s only been available in the US since fall 2009!

6) Aventinus Weizen Eisbock

Weissbierbrauerei G. Schneider & Sohn        Eisbock ……12.0% ABV

Being a wheat beer pioneer savior, Schneider has been brewing since 1872.  Stronger than strong, this is an ideal after-meal digestive.  Powerful aromas and an intense flavor.


$15 to taste all 6 beers
