 Cantina Discovery!

Adega Monte Branco, Estremoz, Portugal

Enologist Luis Louro did stages in California and at the traditional Quinta do Mouro estate in Estremoz before striking out on his own.  Now, he hand-tends 25 hectares of leased vineyards filled with old vines of local varietal favorites.  The wines are made at a new winery that follows his design, built to minimize damage to the fruit and oxidation of the wines.  His goal is to produce versatile, convivial wines with good value for money.  We think he's hitting it out of the park.

2007 Monte Branco Alento Branco, Alentejo: $15.99

This lovely white is made from Roupeiro (40%), Fernão Pires (40%) and Bical (20%), has aromas of wildflowers and citrus, flavors of fresh-cut pear and quince and a dry, crisp nearly weightless finish that makes it perfect for a broad range of foods.

2007 Monte Branco Alento Tinto: $15.99

This hearty, beefy, spicy red combines Aragonês, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouchet and Touriga Nacional into a medium-bodied but intense wine ready for sausages, pizza, venison pot pie, a big cheese plate ... you name it.
