A Taste of Belgium
Belgian beer-brewing originates back to the Middle Ages. Today there are approximately 125 breweries in the country, ranging from international giants to micro-style breweries. On average Belgians consume roughly 25 gallons of beer each year! Let’s explore a few of the various styles that have placed this country as the leader of the brew.

1) Lindemans “Cuvée René” Gueuze Lambic
Gueuze…5.0% ABV; Brouwerij Lindemans; Vlezenbeek, Belgium
A traditional blend of a young and an old Lambic (spontaneously fermented). These are aged for 2-3 years to produce a dryer, fruitier, and more intense sour flavor. Pronounced “GOO-za”.

2) St. Bernardus Wit
Wit, Belgian Wheat Beer…5.5% ABV; Brouwerij St. Bernard; Watou, Belgium
A traditional Witbier developed and brewed in collaboration with the legendary Master Brewer Pierre Celis. Hazy in color and yields herbal-spicy notes from the addition of “gruit” (a coriander and orange peels blend).

3) Koningshoeven Trappist Dubbel
Dubbel…7.0% ABV; Brouwerij de Koningshoeven; Berkel-Enschot, Netherlands
From Holland’s only Trappist brewery (a monastery that is self sufficient and funded by brewing beer among other profitable activities), this is a very rare beer. Dubbel became a name used to describe this popular “double” strong brown ale. Typically a darker ale with hints of caramel.

4) Kasteel Tripel
Tripel ……11.0% ABV; Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck; Ingelmunster, Belgium
Tripels (used to describe the strength of the alcohol content) are golden craft beers known to be extra strong pale ales. Typically you are going to see tripel in the pale to golden/amber color holding a sweet/spicy flavor. From a brewery that was formerly a medieval castle.

5) Urthel “Samaranth” Quadrium Ale
Quadrupel …11.0% ABV; De Leyerth Brouwerijen; Ruiselede, Belgium
Quaprupels are (you guessed it) one step higher than a tripel in terms of alcohol strength. Typically they run in a deep dark and rich personality. A malty and full-bodied ale with huge character and mouthfeel. This was the brewmaster’s special brew made specifically for her and her husband’s wedding.
